Chevrolet confirms 2014 Chevy SS, will compete in 2013 NASCAR

Today Chevrolet announced a V-8 powered, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan to the U.S. lineup, the Chevrolet SS. The SS will also be Chevrolet's next NASCAR Sprint Cup racecar and will debut at the next Daytona 500.

The passenger version of the SS will be a 2014 model and will arrive at the showrooms in late 2013.

There has been a lot of speculation on what will carry the SS badge. It is clear now that the vehicle in question is going to be based on a Holden Commodore. It will be a derivative of the award-winning global rear-wheel-drive architecture that has spawned vehicles like Chevrolet Camaro and the remarkably fun, but shortlived Pontiac GXP.

Chevrolet has used the SS (Super Sport) designation on high-performance models since 1957. It was first used on a 1957 Corvette prototype race car built under the guidance of the legendary engineer Zora Arkus-Duntow who planned to enter it in the Le-Mans 24-hour race.

1961 Chevrolet Impala was the first production car offered with the SS option. 453 were built with the performance upgrades which included a modified chassis and suspension, power brakes, a steering column mounted tachometer and unique wheels and tires. The latest SS model in the Chevrolet lineup is the fifth-generation Camaro, which debuted in 2010.

It's the best factory Camaro ever! The 2012 COPO Camaro is a pure drag racing car built to compete in NHRA Stock Eliminator and Super Stock classes.

The only COPO was the very first one, known as the Proof of Concept car, serial number 001. GM was not ready to release engine power numbers, drag times, or vehicle weights, as class details are still being worked out with the National Hot Rod Association. COPO stands for Central Office Production Order, a process that was used in the '60s for fleet managers to order unusual combinations of options.

Dealer Fred Gibb figured out how to use the system to get GM to assemble cars that were never intended for production. He ordered 1969 Camaros that used a derivative of GM's 427ci, all-aluminum ZL1 race engine, and bought enough of them to make them legal to compete as production cars in NHRA and AHRA drag racing. There were 69 ZL1 Camaros built in 1969, and Chevrolet is building the same number for 2012. The new COPO is a pure race car, not ready to be licensed for the street, and is available with three different engines: a 427 that's of course aspirated, a 327 with a 2.9L Whipple blower, and a 327 with a 4.0L Whipple blower. Buyers have the option to own all three engines, all stamped with the serial number of their car. The COPO is gutted of all the street equipment, has a roll-cage, and the original independent rear suspension has been replaced with a Bizarre Strange 9-inch rear-end with 4.29 gears and a spool. Other aftermarket parts include Strange struts and brakes, and ATI Power-glide transmission, an Aeromotive fuel system, Bogart wheels with COPO engraving, and Hoosier 30x9.00-15 radial slicks and skinny front drag tires.

Chevy makes “Sunscreen” for Corvette ZR1

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 leverages carbon-fiber body pieces to reduce weight and improve performance, as well as to improve the looks of the car.

It is common knowledge that uncovered carbon fiber used in car’s outer body gets degraded by sunlight. Hence, automakers tried to protect carbon fiber by using paint or use a different material that was designed to resemble carbon fiber. But Chevrolet ZR1 senior design engineer Mark Voss and his team of experts have come up with something that GM calls a “sunscreen” for the car: a UV-resistant clear coat that provides exceptional coverage on carbon fiber while protecting it from the harmful effects of sunlight, as well as from potential chips and scratches. He and his team devised this car sunscreen after working hard for three years. The result: the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 buyers now can enjoy the exquisite honeycombed appearance of exposed-weave carbon fiber on the car’s roof panel, roof bow, rocker molding, front fascia splitter and the underside of its hood.

Though everyone said it could not be a possible feat, Voss and his team intensely worked on it. The challenge was to provide customers with exposed-weave carbon fiber with the durability they have come to expect from a chic Corvette. While others faked it, the Chevy presented a real deal. Finally, they succeeded and their hard work bore a visibly great fruit – a “sunscreen” for cars. Chevrolet Camaro deposes Mustang’s supremacy in 2010, first time in 24 years

It seems like General Motors Co.’s Chevy brand is on a roll. After all, Chevrolet Camaro has finally deposed Ford Mustang from its Numero Uno position in 2010, a title that Ford was holding for 24 years since 1986. The Chevrolet Camaro clearly outdid Ford Mustang by clocking sales of 81,299 units against 73,716 units of the latter. It must be noted that Ford Mustang had been the US leader since 1985 though the rivalry between Camaro and Mustang dates back to the 1960s.

Chevy’s awesome Aveo to be on US roads in 2012

Hendrick Chevrolet brings some good news for all Chevy fans. Chevrolet’s small car Aveo’s production will start in Seoul, Korea next year and the U.S.-assembled version of the car will be rolled out in 2012.

The US production of the Aveo at the Orion Township plant was reconfirmed last week. Originally, the new Aveo was unveiled at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January as Chevrolet Aveo RS, a concept car. It was later displayed in production form at the Paris show recently.

GM Daewoo has led the design and R&D of the new model as GM’s global mini and small car development base. Aveo with its solid fuel economy rating and spacious feature-rich interior is going to grab more attention than ever.
